Stink bugThe PowerX South Florida Pest Library features a wide array of culprits that are ruining lawns and yards everywhere. We keep tabs on each and every pest in the region, from the most common to the rarest. This week we feature a critter that is truly cringe-worthy: the aptly named stink bug.

Members of the hemiptera order (which includes aphids and cicadas), are sometimes referred to as shield bugs, thanks to their shape. As their name clearly conveys, they are best known for releasing a foul odor when threatened; they have small glands on their thorax that emits a bad smelling liquid when mishandled or attacked.

Like most insects, stink bugs are prolific: there are literally thousands of species across the world. The most well known are the brown stink bug (Euschistus servus) and the green stink bug (Acrosternum hilare or Chinavia hilaris), both commonly found throughout the country – including warm and wet South Florida.

Stink bugs range in color from dull brown to bright green, although you will find them in all sorts of shades that help them blend in with foliage. However, some varieties display bright orange marking that may serve as warnings to predators. In any case, the most common feature among most species is a triangle or shield-shaped plate on their backs.
